EU to impose additional sanctions against Russia due to referendums

The EU countries will introduce new sanctions against Russia, its leadership and the organizers of referendums in the Donetsk and Lugansk People’s Republics (DNR and LNR), Kherson and Zaporozhye regions “as soon as possible.” This was announced by the head of European diplomacy, Josep Borrell, with reference to the statement of the EU Foreign Ministers, transmits Reuters. He clarified that we are talking about both personal and sectoral sanctions.

According to Borrell, only a political decision was made today, what kind of sanctions will be discussed and in relation to which sectors and people they will be applied – he did not specify. The head of European diplomacy added only that new restrictive measures would be presented as soon as possible.

Borrell also promised to “bring to account” Russia, its political leadership and all those involved in organizing referendums and “other violations of international law” in Ukraine.

Tomorrow, September 23, in the territories of the LPR, DPR, Kherson and Zaporozhye regions, referendums will begin on the issue of joining the territory of Russia. Voting will last until September 27, after which the results will be announced within five days, about this the day before, September 21, reported in the election commission of the Kherson region.

Earlier, on September 21, Russian President Vladimir Putin announced about carrying out partial mobilization in the country. At present, according to him, the Russian Armed Forces operate on the line of contact, which exceeds 1,000 km. Mobilization activities were supposed to start yesterday, September 21.
