Estonian PM urges to prepare for power outages

Russia may disconnect Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania from its power grid, the citizens of these countries need to be prepared for possible problems with electricity supply. This statement was made by Estonian Prime Minister Kaya Kallas during her address to the inhabitants of the state. Transcript published on the website of the Estonian government.

“We must be prepared for the fact that Russia can disconnect Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania from its energy system,” Kallas said.

She added that Estonia has been preparing for a "failure break" with the Russian power system for several years. Despite this, according to the prime minister, Estonian residents may still face temporary problems related to the supply of electricity. Kallas advised companies, government agencies and citizens of the country to be prepared for such an outcome.

Kallas addressed the people of Estonia against the background of the announcement by Russian President Vladimir Putin of partial mobilization in the Russian Federation. The prime minister noted that the goal of the Russian authorities is to "intimidate" Europe. She also stressed that the announced partial mobilization in Russia did not affect the level of Estonian security. According to Kallas, the country is still safe.

The Estonian prime minister also pointed to Moscow's attempts to put pressure on the EU with the help of energy prices. “The best protection is that we do not succumb to this influence,” Kallas said.

After the start of the special operation in Ukraine, Western countries imposed large-scale sanctions against Russia, which also affected the energy sector. Against the backdrop of restrictions and reductions in Russian energy supplies to Europe, the EU countries are facing an energy crisis. As part of its overcoming one of the latest measures, the European Commission suggested reduce electricity demand by at least 10% until March 31, 2023 and by 5% during peak hours.
