Enterovirus causing paralysis in children spreads rapidly in the US
Alexandria Boehm, director of wastewater monitoring and control organisation WastewaterSCAN, reported a significant increase in levels of enterovirus D68, which can cause paralysis in children.
“We are currently seeing increases in EV-D68 nucleic acids in wastewater across the country, and their concentrations continue to increase,” she said.
According to her data, in August 2024, the number of virus particles in wastewater increased sixfold compared to the previous month, creating the risk of an increase in the number of diseases in the United States.
Earlier, 15 people were reported to have died from an unknown illness in western India. At least 10 people, including children, died from the disease between September 3 and 10, after which five more deaths were confirmed.
