Ecologists opposed the assignment of the "green" status of nuclear and gas power generation in the EU

Several environmental organizations spoke against the EU's plans to assign "environmentally friendly" status to nuclear and gas power generation. ClientEarth, the European division of the Wildlife Fund (WWF), Transport & Environment (T&E) and BUND have announced their readiness to sue the European Commission.

In July the European Parliament approved draft law (Taxonomy Act), which includes in the list of "environmentally friendly" European companies that produce energy from natural gas and nuclear fuel. This status will allow such companies to qualify for large investment volumes and tax incentives. Even then, many environmentalists, in particular Greenpeace, opposed these initiatives.

Now, environmental organizations have officially called on the European Commission to abandon such plans and give environmentalists a response within the next 22 weeks. If there is no answer, the environmentalists will appeal to the European Court.

“Artificial support for gas, which is a hydrocarbon fuel, undermines the fundamental goals of the EU to use cleaner, more affordable and safer energy sources ... The Taxonomy Act, which should be a model for responsible investment, sends the wrong signal to investors, and therefore should be revised,” environmentalists say.
