Doctor Tonev explained why you can’t accumulate lack of sleep until the weekend

Neurologist at the Nearmedic clinic on Maroseyka Mikhail Tonev told "RG"that insufficient sleep on weekdays and sleep until the middle of the day on weekends adversely affects human health.

According to the doctor, it was previously believed that chronic sleep deprivation could be compensated for by longer sleep on weekends, and that after a short sleep, cognitive functions are fully restored. At the same time, Tonev emphasized that recent studies show that concentration and memory are not fully restored even after three nights with a full sleep after one sleepless one, which indicates the seriousness of violations of neurohumoral processes in the brain.

As the specialist noted, people who sleep from 7 to 9 hours are much less likely to get sick and recover faster from infections and viruses, and when switching to a long period of wakefulness and chronic lack of sleep, people complain of a breakdown, a sharp decrease in memory and concentration .

Tonev added that by not getting enough sleep today, a person inevitably creates cognitive problems for himself in the future. The specialist clarified that the findings suggest that chronic lack of sleep can lead to irreversible changes in the brain that can trigger the development of Alzheimer's disease or other neurodegenerative diseases of the central nervous system.
