Dismantling of Soviet monuments began in Estonia

The monument to the Soviet T-34 tank in Narva was removed from its pedestal and sent to the Estonian War Museum, the Postimees newspaper reported. The “Narva Tank” (installed in 1970 at the place where the advancing units of the Red Army crossed the river in 1944 and broke through the Nazi defenses) is the last monument of this kind that has survived on the territory of Estonia, Interfax notes. This happened despite the fact that on 15 August the Narva city council refused to support the government's decision to move the memorial. In response to the dismantling of the monument, the mayor of Narva, Katri Raik, announced that she would not stand as a candidate for the elections to the Estonian Parliament (Riigikogu) in March 2023.

The dismantling of the monument tank was preceded by a statement by the Prime Minister of the Republic, Kai Kallas, about the demolition of all monuments to Soviet soldiers by the end of the year. On July 21, she said that the fate of each specific monument will be dealt with by the local government. If there are remains under the monument, they will be reburied. Today, Kallas said that all the monuments of the Soviet era will be dismantled and transferred to museums.
