Deputy Navy Commander Astapov: Marines helped liberate Berdyansk

The landing of the marines of the Black Sea Fleet and the Caspian Flotilla in the Berdyansk region helped to deceive the Ukrainian troops.

Deputy Commander-in-Chief of the Russian Navy, Lieutenant-General Viktor Astapov, in an interview with the Krasnaya Zvezda newspaper, said that the landing of the marines of the Black Sea Fleet and the Caspian Flotilla, which was carried out in the Berdyansk region, helped deceive the Ukrainian troops and liberate the city.

According to him, the Armed Forces of Ukraine were waiting for the appearance of the amphibious assault and mined the waters of the ports of the Azov and Black Seas.

“The actions of our fleet made it possible to deceive the Ukrainian military and land the marines of the Caspian Flotilla and the Black Sea Fleet in the Berdyansk region. At the same time, most of the marines of the fleets entered the liberated territory by land,” Astapov said.

He clarified that the marines helped to liberate not only Mariupol and Berdyansk, but also a number of other settlements in Donbass.
