The Czech Republic, which presides over the EU Council, will initiate discussions with member countries of the association to ban the issuance of Schengen visas for Russians at the end of August, France Press (AFP) reports with reference to Czech Foreign Minister Jan Lipavsky.

“A complete ban on the issuance of Russian visas by all EU member states could be another very effective sanction against Russia,” Lipavsky said.

On August 10, the official representative of the German government, Steffen Hebestreit, during a briefing, said that the EU began discussing the initiative of a number of countries of the Union to ban the issuance of visas to Russian citizens.

On August 11, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz noted that he could hardly imagine stopping the issuance of Schengen visas to Russians. According to him, ordinary citizens of Russia are not responsible for the actions of the Russian authorities in Ukraine.

On the same day, Estonia became the first EU country to restrict the entry of Russians. As an exception, the residence permit in Estonia is extended for one year to those Russian students who complete their studies at Estonian higher educational institutions, the Foreign Ministry said in a statement.
