CSKA squeezed the maximum out of Sochi – Newspaper Kommersant No. 180 (7381) of 09/29/2022

Five matches took place in the third round of the Russian Cup group stage. The biggest victory of the day was won by Lokomotiv, who defeated Khimki 5-0, and the most unexpected was Orenburg, which, after a 2-2 draw in regular time with Dynamo, took the upper hand on penalties. In addition, CSKA, having beaten Sochi 2:1, became the only team that showed a 100% result.
On the first game day of the third round of the Russian Cup, all the matches were intriguing in their own way, and certainly none of them had a passing character, because all the teams, even those who failed the start, had absolutely nothing to lose thanks to the gentle tournament formula. The same “Sochi” and “Orenburg”, which did not have points, retained the opportunity to compete for at least third place in the groups, which also opens the way to the playoffs. And Khimki, even with two defeats, managed to take one point and was only one point behind Lokomotiv, which was in third place.
The match between the Moscow Region club and the railroad was very important for both sides, not only from a tournament point of view. They faced big problems in the championship and ended up next door at the bottom of the table. Lokomotiv suffered three defeats in a row, which they diluted only with a victory on penalties over Krasnodar in the Cup. Khimki never won at all under the leadership of Spartak Gogniev, who led the red-blacks in early September. Both teams were in dire need of a positive result. Apparently, therefore, their coaches did not resort to a wide personnel rotation, and the red-green mentor Josef Zinnbauer put up an almost optimal line-up, in which only Dmitry Barinov was missing.
Muscovites surpassed Khimki in sharpness and naturally achieved success when light and fast Pedro Gabriel fluttered away from the defenders on the left flank and embodied a one-on-one with the goalkeeper in a goal. And it’s also Anton Mitryushkin who saved his teammates several times. Nevertheless, Pedro Gabriel scored a double, making another foray into someone else’s penalty area on the left. Now the technical Brazilian was not embarrassed even by the presence of several opponents who tried to stop him. Note that in both cases, Anton Miranchuk assisted the newcomer of Lokomotiv. Moreover, immediately after the break, he made an assistant hat-trick, and Pedro Gabriel scored a scorer. This bunch simply tore apart Khimki, and the Brazilian legionnaire continued to literally mock his opponents, scoring his fourth goal. In the end, it all ended in a 5-0 defeat.
Meanwhile, Krasnodar received the unexpected leader of Group A, Pari Nizhny Novgorod, and put the squeeze on him in the end, when John Cordoba and Olakunle Olusegun decided the outcome of this meeting with an interval of two minutes. The Kuban team won 2:0 and moved up to first place with seven points, while Lokomotiv caught up with Nizhny with five points.
The confrontation between CSKA and Sochi this season is viewed primarily through the prism of competition between the former and current teams of Vladimir Fedotov. In the championship, the head coach of the army team confidently beat his former wards, but now, for objective reasons, it was more difficult for him to count on victory. A whole group of legionnaires left for the national teams and could not take part in the cup match, and the central defender Igor Diveev was out for a long time due to injury. Fedotov had to make the most of the bench, although he has a long one. However, his colleague from Sochi, Vadim Garanin, released the so-called mixed squad, introducing, in particular, fresh newcomers Moussa Sissako and Luka Djordjevic.
The scoring was opened by CSKA midfielder Konstantin Kuchaev, who lay in wait for a rebound after a header by Adolfo Gaich and a save by Sochi goalkeeper Soslan Dzhanaev. The Red-Blues did not seem to sparkle in attack, but they kept the match under control. The Chernomorians did not understand how they could open the army defenses led by the Brazilians Bruno Fuchs and Willian Rocha. And if anything, they were insured in the “frame” by Igor Akinfeev. In addition, the experienced Artur Yusupov and Nikita Burmistrov asked the guests one after the other before the break. True, Ivan Oblyakov was forced to leave the field among the Muscovites.
Everything changed when Sochi team leader Christian Noboa came out for the second half, with whom she feels much better. As a result, another “joker” of Garanin – Vladislav Sarveli scored the return goal, clearly disposing of the ball and free space in the penalty area. But Fedotov had almost no one to strengthen the game, with the exception of Fedor Chalov. And the forward of the army team realized a far from obvious chance, closing the serve of Moises with his head. Having beaten Sochi 2:1, CSKA secured the first position in group D with nine points. At the same time, Ural is second here, having six points after a minimal victory over Torpedo.
Meanwhile, there was a sensation in Group C. Orenburg, losing by the 82nd minute of the match with Dynamo 0:2 and already left in the minority after the removal of Nikolai Titkov, managed to avoid defeat in regular time. Then, in the course of the penalty shoot-out, the hosts were the first to miss and still snatched the victory – 4:3, after Daniil Lesovoy took the fifth shot from Muscovites. The Orenburgers still occupy the last place, but they earned two points and improved their standings.
