“Sanctions because of sanctions”
On October 6, the European Union adopted the eighth package of anti-Russian sanctions, which provides for a ban on the transportation of Russian oil and oil products by sea at a price above the established ceiling. In addition, as part of the new sanctions, the ban on the import and export of goods has been expanded, including steel products, machinery, chemicals, plastics and cigarettes. At the same time, Ivan Vilibor Sincic, a Croatian politician, member of the European Parliament delegation for relations with Russia (D-RU), believes that the effect of sanctions will be insignificant.
In conversation with Izvestia Sincic noted that the European Union had to introduce new sanctions due to the fact that he was obliged to somehow respond to the accession to Russia of the DPR, LPR, as well as the Kherson and Zaporozhye regions.
According to the Croatian politician, after so many restrictions already introduced, new ones will have little effect, except for a political one. Sincic stressed that by now sanctions have become an end in themselves – “sanctions because of sanctions”.
As the politician noted, the EU introduces new measures because it must respond somehow, otherwise the Union will look “weak or powerless”. Sincic concluded that Russia can expect new waves of sanctions over a long period, no matter how ineffective they may be.
