Retired Colonel Mikhail Timoshenko in an interview with URA.RU spoke about the advantages of ammunition with depleted uranium.

According to him, those shells for tanks that the UK handed over to Ukraine reach their target much faster, pierce armor and ignite spontaneously.

He clarified that the armor is pierced by cumulative projectiles, in which the internal cavity is filled with explosives. At the same time, a ballistic tip made of a soft alloy is installed in them from the side of a sharp warhead.

“The moment such a projectile explodes, the funnel focuses the detonation wave and creates a rod of flying molten metal. Liquid steel makes a hole in the armor, into which molten metal flies and causes a fire inside the armored object,” Tymoshenko said.

The retired colonel added that it was possible to break through the armor with kinetic energy. In particular, for the manufacture of such shells, depleted uranium is used, the cost of which is low. Such a projectile is pyrophoric, that is, it ignites itself.

“It ignites when heated, at the moment when the crowbar breaks through the armor. Depleted uranium oxides sprayed into the air are hazardous to human health. People inhale this dust and it gets stuck in the lungs,” he stressed.
