CNN Turk: Russia may launch direct flight to Northern Cyprus

Direct flights between Russia and the partially recognized Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) may be opened in November this year, the TV channel reports. CNN Turk with reference to sources. Since 1974 Cyprus has been divided between the Greek and Turkish communities. In 1983, the Turkish Cypriots unilaterally announced the creation of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC). Turkey is the only country that recognizes the independence of the TRNC and has an embassy in North Nicosia. The TRNC has an embassy in Ankara.

According to information received by the channel from diplomatic sources, Russian commercial flights will operate directly between Russia and the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus, possibly through a tour operator. CNN Turk clarifies that the Russian authorities have also given their consent to the launch of flights. “This event, which is perceived as a diplomatic victory for the TRNC and Turkey, is expected to be announced in the coming days,” the TV channel specified.

Note that you can fly to South Cyprus by direct flight. In this case, tourists can freely visit both the northern and southern parts of Cyprus. However, if travelers decide to take a connecting flight in Turkey, they will only be able to visit the northern part of the island, as the Republic of Cyprus considers this to be an illegal border crossing.
