CNN introduces paid access to site materials – Kommersant

Today the media company CNN announced on the introduction of partially paid access to materials on its news site CNN.com. “Starting today, we will ask users in the United States to pay a small monthly fee to receive unlimited access to CNN.com,” said Alex McCallum, CNN executive vice president of digital products and services.

He explained that the introduction of the fee does not yet apply to “average CNN website users who read only a few articles a month.” “Only after users have read a certain number of articles will they be asked to pay to continue reading the site,” said Mr. McCallum. “In addition to unlimited access to CNN.com content, paid subscribers will benefit from exclusive election coverage , original documentaries, a daily selection of the most compelling journalism, and fewer ads.” The company has not yet specified how much of the site’s materials will be available for free.

Recently, more and more news and media publications have introduced paid or limited paid access. One of them was The New York Times, which, after introducing paid access to a number of its materials, significantly increased revenue from digital services. Besides, note American media, as users gradually switch from television content to online content, television companies are receiving less and less revenue from advertising on TV and paid subscriptions to their channels.
