Chairman of the Russian "Oscar Commission" resigned due to the decision not to nominate the film for the competition

Pavel Chukhrai, the chairman of the Russian "Oscar Commission", is leaving his post. He made this decision because of the refusal of the Presidium of the Russian Film Academy to nominate the film for an Oscar this year.

Mr. Chukhrai told TASSthat sent a letter to the members of the "Oscar Commission". In it, he stated that the leadership of the film academy "unilaterally decided" not to nominate the Russian film for an Oscar. Mr. Chukhrai called this decision "illegal", because, according to him, the members of the organization "not only were not consulted, they did not even consider it necessary to notify about such a decision."

“I want to notify you that in protest I am resigning from my duties as chairman and resigning from this organization,” the director’s letter says.

Presidium of the Russian Film Academy the day before announcedthat will not nominate a domestic film for an Oscar in 2022. This decision was not substantiated in any way. At the same time, committee member Alexei Uchitel and director Andrei Konchalovsky said that Russia should nominate its own film, while Nikita Mikhalkov, chairman of the Union of Cinematographers, was against it.

The category "Best Foreign Language Film" is included in the main nominations of the American Film Awards. The 95th Academy Awards will take place on March 12, 2023.
