Borrell refused to consider the aspiration of Ukraine to NATO as the main issue

The head of European diplomacy, Josep Borrell, said that Ukraine's desire to join NATO is not the main issue at the moment. In an interview with the Spanish TV channel 24 Horas, he noted that Kyiv's desire to join the alliance can be understood.

However, Borrell pointed out that it is now more important to maintain the ability of Ukraine to defend.

Prior to this, President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky said that Kyiv was counting on an accelerated entry into NATO. He has already applied for it.

Wherein The New York Times writesthat Washington and its European allies still fear that Russian opposition will lead to the risk of a large-scale confrontation. The publication draws attention to the problems that Ukraine will have on the way to NATO.

Thus, France and Germany were skeptical about the inclusion of Ukraine in the North Atlantic alliance. President Biden has also been reluctant in the past to support Ukraine's hypothetical membership, fearing further U.S. military commitments.
