Afghanistan ceased to be major US ally outside NATO - statement

[ad_1]

Afghanistan has ceased to be the main ally of the United States outside of NATO, according to a memorandum distributed by the White House.

As reported, the corresponding decision was made by the US President, depriving Afghanistan of such a status.

Afghanistan received this status in July 2012. In August 2021, the United States and Western countries completed the withdrawal of their troops from Afghanistan after the successful actions of the Taliban movement (it is under UN sanctions for terrorist activities; in Russia, this organization is recognized as a terrorist organization, its activities have been banned since 2003).

Currently, about 20 countries have the status of the main US ally outside NATO, and the issue of granting such a status to Taiwan is being considered.
