“A not easy race” for Verstappen in the Netherlands

Max Verstappen (NED/Red Bull), winner of the Dutch Grand Prix: “It was not an easy race, so it is all the more rewarding to win it (…) During the race, I was able to give my opinion on what I wanted with the tyres. And I said I didn’t want to use the hard tyres. But we had to do it because of the virtual safety car which arrived a bit by accident. And then we went out and clearly lacked pace on this hard compound compared to the Mercedes who had intermediate tires (faster, editor’s note). I think the gap was still big enough to manage them until the end, but they would certainly have been much closer (…). Then, later in the race, the safety car came out and there was no way to stay on the hard tires so we went back to the pits (…) we put the soft tires (…) . We got back on track, George (Russell, Mercedes, Editor’s note) also put on soft tires. We signed a very good restart.»

george russell (GBR/Mercedes), 2nd: “To be honest we knew we had a really good pace and thought there was a real chance we could fight for the Lewis win. (Hamilton, his teammate, 4th on arrival, editor’s note). He rode a great race and as a team we deserved a better result. Unfortunately, that’s how it happens sometimes. We are really proud and happy with the pace we showed.»

Charles Leclerc (MON/Ferrari), 3rd: “We didn’t have the rhythm. We weren’t fast enough. So that’s our main concern at the moment, to try to regain the speed we had at the start of the season. (…) Now Mercedes is also in the fight and they are very fast. They were extremely quick today, especially on the hard tyres.»
